In the summer of 2009, a young West Indies fast bowler called Kemar Roach announced himself on the world cricket stage by dominating the then all-conquering Ricky Ponting.
The Barbadian dismissed Ponting three times in three Tests that summer but it was a delivery that hit the Tasmanian on his elbow in Perth which lived longest in most people’s memories.
Ponting battled on after that blow for a further 40 minutes before swallowing his pride and leaving the WACA Ground pitch to have treatment, retiring hurt for the first time in his Test career and suggesting the veteran’s batting powers were starting to decline.
It was a moment which made the pair’s rematch around two years later in the Caribbean eagerly anticipated.
Before leaving for the Caribbean, Ponting had claimed he’d helped launch Roach’s career during that summer of ’09 and the Windies quick owed him a favour or two, but it doesn’t appear that favour is forthcoming.
After not getting much of chance to bowl to Ponting in the first Test in Barbados last week, Roach didn’t take long to nab his man during Australia’s first innings of the second match in Trinidad.
On his way to the third five-wicket haul of his Test career, Roach bowled a snorter of a ball to 37-year-old Ponting which reared up off the Queen’s Park Oval pitch, caught the edge and was nabbed by Darren Sammy at first slip after bursting through wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh’s gloves.
It makes Ponting the batsman Roach has dismissed the most in his 16-Test career, not that the 23-year-old feels the former Australian captain is his bunny.
“To get that wicket, on a difficult pitch, easy for batting, it’s very good,” Roach said.
“I’ll keep coming at him, that’s my job, and I want to do it to the best of my ability.
“I say he’s a challenge. I won’t say I have the wood on him – he’s a great batsman.
“I respect what he’s done in cricket, but I have a job to do for my team. If that’s to run at him, then I’m going to do it.”
