Roach bringing pace back to Windies

A fast bowler wheeling away in celebration with stumps flying was a common sight in the West Indies two decades ago.

And in Wednesday’s rain-marred fourth day of the second Test between Australia and the Windies, Kemar Roach did his bit to remind everyone of how it used to be in the Caribbean.

In a fiery spell of full and fast bowling that his idol – the late, great Malcolm Marshall – made a speciality, Roach ripped through Australia’s top order.

The 23-year-old removed David Warner, Ed Cowan and Shane Watson in a 10-over spell at Queen’s Park Oval, the obvious highlight being his destruction of Watson’s stumps on his way to a double-wicket maiden in his first over.

The haul takes Roach’s tally to eight so far in the Test – just two away from becoming the first Windies bowler since Curtly Ambrose in 1993 to take 10 in a game against Australia – and 13 in the series.

The wickets were especially poignant for Roach coming as they did on what would have been Marshall’s 54th birthday.

“I’ve watched a lot of clips of him and he was just such a great, great, great bowler,” Roach said.

“He was the best bowler in the world at the time (he was playing). I’m just glad – I can’t really explain it. It’s a good feeling to know that I got some wickets on his birthday … it makes me feel warm as a West Indian to know I can go out here and perform for the West Indies like he did.”

Roach certainly shares some similarities with Marshall. Both came from the island of Barbados and make up for their lack of height by bowling a full, straight and wicket-taking line.

While Roach clearly has some way to go if he’s even going to come close to Marshall’s remarkable record of 376 Test wickets at 20.94, he’s certainly giving Australia’s batsmen plenty to think about.

“He’s bowling pretty well and someone we really need to blunt out of the game,” Cowan said.

“He’s a guy in form, he’s got his tail up and he’s bowling wicket-taking deliveries.”
