Rain ruins finish to 2nd Test

Rain appears to have ruined any hopes of a grandstand finish to the second Test between Australia and the West Indies in Trinidad.

The Windies were 2-53 chasing 215 off 61 overs when rain halted play after just after lunch and there was no resumption before tea.

Rain has caused stoppages on all five days of the Test and is likely to ensure the match finishes in a draw, which will be enough for Australia to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy with a 1-0 lead going into the final Test in Dominica next week.

Michael Clarke at least gave some chance of forcing a result when he declared with Australia 8-160 in their second innings.

Ben Hilfenhaus (2-22) gave Australia the perfect start by removing openers Adrian Barath (5) and Kieran Powell (4) but Windies skipper Darren Sammy then counter-attacked with an unbeaten 30 off just 26 balls before the rain came.

Kemar Roach had earlier claimed the first 10-wicket haul by a West Indian for seven years with the double dismissal of Michael Hussey and Hilfenhaus after lunch.

Roach finished with 5-41 to go with his first innings 5-105, the first time a Windies bowler has taken 10 in a Test since Corey Collymore in 2005.

No West Indian has claimed 10 wickets in a Test against Australia since Curtly Ambrose in Adelaide in 1993.

The diminutive quick, who claimed the three wickets Australia lost on a rain-shortened day four, removed Hilfenhaus (0) just three balls after bowling Michael Hussey for 24 when the Aussie veteran inside-edged a delivering back onto his stumps.

Australia added just 50 runs for the fall of two wickets in a 25-over first session on Thursday, with Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke the men out.

Ponting (41) fell hooking Fidel Edwards (1-28) straight down Kieran Powell’s throat at square leg.

The wicket was Edwards’ first of the match after beating the edge of the bat several times in both innings.

Windies skipper Darren Sammy (1-17) then chipped in with a sharp reaction catch off his own bowling to remove Clarke for 15 and leave Australia 5-95.
