Rain delaying Champions Trophy final

England and India could be denied the opportunity to win the Champions Trophy, with Sunday’s final at Edgbaston in danger of being abandoned as a no result because of persistent rain.

The two captains, Alastair Cook and MS Dhoni, made it out for the toss under gloomy skies but showers fell before the planned start of play have persisted through to the afternoon.

The match will be abandoned as a no result if play doesn’t start by 4.18 p.m. local time, with the title being shared. There is no reserve day set aside in case of bad weather because of the crowded international calendar.

India’s 2002 final against Sri Lanka was abandoned in similar circumstances. While the Indians are two-time world champions, England haven’t won a 50-over ICC trophy.
