Race for Sheffield Shield final heats up

The possibilities seem endless.

The race to secure a spot in the Sheffield Shield final reaches a dramatic climax this week as all six teams battle it out for a coveted berth.

Only Victoria will be guaranteed a spot in the decider if they can secure an outright victory.

The rest will need to rely on other results to go their way, with South Australia and Western Australia the next best placed teams.

Such is the closeness of the competition, even last-placed NSW could end up hosting the final if they beat the Redbacks and everything else falls in their favour.

WA are shaping as the smoky under new coach Justin Langer, with the Warriors posting three straight outright victories to surge into serious reckoning.

Each of those wins have been achieved from the brink of defeat, leaving WA full of belief as they attempt to reach their first Shield final in 14 years.

But they face a stern task against the Bulls, who are the defending Shield champions and also won this year’s one-day title.

Victoria’s bid to beat Tasmania received a big blow when paceman Clint McKay was ruled out for the rest of the season with a foot injury.

The second-placed Redbacks have endured a 17-year title drought in Shield ranks, and first-innings points against NSW probably won’t be enough to get them into the final.

In fact, all six teams will take an all-or-nothing approach into the final round in order to boost their chances.

“I don’t think two points is going to get either team in to be fair,” Warriors captain Adam Voges said of his team’s encounter with the Bulls.

“I would think in four days’ time, you will see six points one way or the other.”
