Qld dismissed for 322 in Shield v Victoria

Peter Forrest scored his first Sheffield Shield cricket century this summer as Queensland reached 322 on day one of the match against Victoria.

James Hopes made 88 on Monday in a crucial 169-run stand with Forrest that saved the day.

Left-armer Will Sheridan was on a hat-trick in the first hour and finished with 4-71, while wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb finished with five catches.

Spin twins Fawad Ahmed and Clive Rose impressed in their Shield debuts – Ahmed took 2-79 and Rose snared 3-52.

Queensland won the toss for this top-of-the-table clash, but slumped to 4-41 in the first hour.

Nathan Reardon survived Sheridan’s hat-trick ball.

Reardon and Forrest put on 49 before Ahmed trapped Reardon lbw in the fifth over after lunch for 17, leaving the Bulls teetering at 5-90.

Forrest and Hopes then combined for their stand that formed the backbone of the innings.

Rose broke the partnership when he bowled Hopes with a superb delivery for 88, meaning the Queensland skipper has gone six seasons without a Shield ton.

Ahmed, the former asylum seeker from Pakistan, took his second wicket when a sharply-turning leg break had Forrest caught behind for 119.

Forrest dug in for nearly five hours and faced 235 balls, hitting 15 fours.

Tail-end resistance from Nathan Hauritz (20), first-gamer Ronan McDonald (18) and Cameron Gannon (13) took the first innings past 300, but the Bulls’ last five wickets fell for 63.

Rose bowled McDonald on the last ball of the day to end the innings.
