Queensland need 82 runs with nine wickets in hand to seal Sheffield Shield title No.7 after going to lunch at 1-51 on day four of the final against Tasmania at the Gabba.
The Bulls received a scare when they were reduced to 1-6 after Shield player of the year Jackson Bird (1-22) had Alex Kemp caught behind for six.
However, Queensland steadied by lunch thanks to Wade Townsend (26 not out) and Andrew Robinson (18 not out).
The Bulls were set 133 for victory after bowling Tasmania out for 167 in their second innings earlier on Monday.
Bulls skipper James Hopes led from the front, taking 5-61 including the prized scalp of Test opener Ed Cowan (71).
Tasmania resumed on day four at 6-136 before Hopes sparked a collapse of 4-8.
Allrounder Luke Butterworth was caught behind off Hopes for 23, ending a 54-run seventh-wicket stand with Cowan.
Then Cowan finally succumbed after almost four hours at the crease – again caught behind off that man Hopes.
Hopes completed his sixth five-wicket first-class haul when Jason Krejza (three) played on.
It added to a fine all-round match from the Queensland captain, who also made a telling 58 that helped the Bulls grab an unlikely first-innings lead over the defending champions.
