Proteas Petersen suffers hamstring injury

South African opening batsman Alviro Petersen suffered a hamstring injury while batting in the second Test against England at Headingley and could be out for the rest of the match.

The injury occurred in the later stages of Petersen’s top-scoring innings of 182 on Friday, during South Africa’s first-innings of 419.

A scan confirmed a grade one strain that should sideline him for between seven and 10 days, but South African team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said on Saturday that the 31-year-old could be called upon to bat again.

“This type of injury usually requires a recovery time of approximately seven to 10 days, however if he is needed to bat in the Proteas’ second innings he will do so,” Moosajee said.

Faf du Plessis replaced Petersen in the field.

Petersen is expected to be fit for the third and final Test which starts at Lord’s on August 16.
