Pommy press give Aussies a pasting

The English media have turned on Australia’s under-performing cricket team – imploring the tourists to put up a fight.

Michael Clarke’s men have been mauled in their one-day series in England with Alastair Cook’s team enjoying a 3-0 lead before the final game of the five-match series.

Even more worrying has been the one-sided nature of the series with the only respite coming in last week’s washed-out match at Edgbaston.

“GISSA GAME” said the headline in The Sun on Sunday, a year out from the next Ashes series in England.

“Come on Aussies, please try to give us a game,” it said.

“England clobbered the Cobbers once more yesterday and this series has turned into a complete mis-match.

“It is 3-0 with one match abandoned and all the talk about Australia’s resurgence following their Ashes defeat 18 months ago looks nothing more than hot air.”

Former England captain Alec Stewart joined in the kicking of the tourists.

“This summer may be one of the wettest on record and Australia are in danger of being washed away,” he wrote.

“England’s third one-sided victory again underlined the gulf in class.”
