Pattinson has back scans in Trinidad

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson is unlikely to play any further part in the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad after undergoing scans on his injured back.

Pattinson left the field at Queen’s Park Oval on day three after tweaking his back throwing a ball in the field.

The 21-year-old didn’t return after suffering back spasms, with the Victorian undergoing scans in Port of Spain on Wednesday.

Australian team officials have already confirmed Pattinson will not bat in his customary No.8 position, and will only take to the field if needed on Thursday’s final day in the rain-marred match.

Pattinson was reportedly still stiff on Wednesday but the news he underwent scans, with the results set to be known later on Thursday, must put him in doubt for the third and final Test starting in Dominica on Monday (0000 Tuesday AEST).

The Trinidad Test was Pattinson’s first since breaking down with a foot injury following the win over India at the SCG in January.

The news will be a blow to captain Michael Clarke and the rest of Australia’s selectors ahead of the third Test with fellow fast bowler Peter Siddle also struggling to prove his fitness after missing the Trinidad match with back stiffness.

If neither bowler is fit it would mean Australia would only have Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus and Mitch Starc as pace options for the third Test.
