Pakistan reach 3-405 against Australia

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin left the field with an injured right shoulder as Pakistan surged to 3-405 at lunch on day two of the second Test on Friday.

The incident happened in the sixth over of the day’s play when Haddin dived to take a catch to his right, gathering the ball on the half-volley and landing heavily on his shoulder.

Australia vice-captain Haddin immediately called for team doctor Peter Brukner to assess the damage and the tough veteran of 59 Tests tried to carry on.

However 37-year-old Haddin’s movements were heavily restricted and he left the field 15 deliveries later for treatment, in obvious pain.

David Warner took over the gloves from his NSW teammate and missed a clear stumping opportunity two overs later off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon when Younis Khan was on 125.

Remarkably Warner took a diving catch down legside off Mitchell Starc’s bowling in the next over to dismiss Azhar Ali for 109 at 3-332.

Azhar’s 236-run partnership with Younis is a record for Pakistan for the third wicket against Australia.

Younis (141 not out) and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (55 not out) have added a further 73 runs for the fourth wicket.

Starc (1-55) said before play on Friday that Australia’s bowlers would have to be patient.

“There’s no life in this wicket for us,” he said.

“There’s no bounce or anything like that.

“We’ve got to work hard and be more consistent.

“It’s going to be hot and dead wicket but we’ve got to find a way.”

Warner had fumbled a chance at gully off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson when Younis was on 112.

Azhar was given two lives on day one on 34 and 46 when Steve Smith at short leg and Warner at slip failed to grasp difficult chances.

The 93-Test veteran Younis has struck three consecutive Test hundreds against Australia, becoming the first player to do so since England’s Herbert Sutcliffe 90 years ago.

Former Test gloveman Matthew Wade has already been named in Australia’s squad for the opening two matches of the five-game series of one-dayers against South Africa in Perth on November 14 and 16.

Wade was due to stand in for the resting Haddin for the first two one-day games but Victoria’s Wade now appears likely to remain in the side for the whole series.

Australia’s next Test assignment is the four-match series against India starting in Brisbane on December 4.

Pakistan lead the current two-match series one-nil and have put themselves in a strong position to claim a series win over Australia for the first time since 1994.
