Pakistan building big total against Aust

Run machine Younis Khan added a double century to his two hundreds in last week’s first Test as Pakistan moved closer to an historic series win over Australia on Friday.

Leading the two-match series one-nil, Pakistan reached 4-517 at tea on day two of the second Test with Younis unbeaten on 205.

Younis added 236 for the third wicket with Azhar Ali (109) and 181 for the fourth wicket with skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (101).

Apart from battling a lifeless pitch suited to a draw, Australia also faced an injury drama involving vice-captain Brad Haddin.

Wicketkeeper Haddin carried a right-shoulder injury into battle in the post-lunch session after going off the field for treatment on Friday morning.

The incident happened in the sixth over of the day’s play when Haddin dived to take a catch to his right, gathering the ball on the half-volley and landing heavily on his shoulder.

Haddin immediately called for team doctor Peter Brukner to assess the damage and the tough veteran of 59 Tests tried to carry on.

However 37-year-old Haddin’s movements were heavily restricted and he left the field 15 deliveries later for treatment.

David Warner took over the gloves from his NSW teammate and missed a clear stumping opportunity two overs later off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon when Younis Khan was on 125.

Warner did however take a diving catch down legside off Mitchell Starc’s bowling in the next over to dismiss Azhar at 3-332 after a record stand of 236 for the third wicket

Twice after lunch Haddin instinctively threw his right arm up in the air for an appeal before quickly dropping it in obvious pain.

Part-time spinner Steve Smith dismissed Misbah caught and bowled shortly before tea. Asad Shafiq is one not out.

Warner had fumbled a catching attempt at gully off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson when Younis was on 112 and also missed a half-chance at slip off Nathan Lyon when Misbah was on 64.

Azhar was given two lives on 34 and 46 on Thursday when Smith at short leg and Warner at slip failed to grasp difficult chances.

The 93-Test veteran Younis, 36, has struck three consecutive Test hundreds against Australia after being overlooked for the one-day series earlier this month.

A combination of a day off from work for Abu Dhabi’s cricket fans and the host team’s dominance led to a crowd of several thousand pouring into the stands midway through the day’s play in a big improvement on day one’s attendance.
