Pakistan bowler Asif released from prison

Mohammad Asif’s lawyers say the Pakistan bowler has been released from prison after serving half of his one-year sentence for involvement in a spot-fixing scandal.

London-based firm SJS Solicitors confirmed Asif was released on Thursday from Canterbury Prison in England for good behavior.

The 29-year-old paceman was found guilty of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments by ensuring no-balls were bowled at predetermined times in a Test against England in August 2010.

Captain Salman Butt and teenage bowler Mohammad Amir were also imprisoned for their roles in the conspiracy.

Asif is 12 months into a seven-year suspension from all cricket that was imposed by the ICC. Two years of the ban are suspended.
