Paceman Tait says international days over

Express paceman Shaun Tait has joined Big Bash League outfit Adelaide Strikers while conceding his international cricket career is over.

Tait will return to his home city of Adelaide after playing for the Melbourne Renegades in last summer’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

But the 29-year-old paceman holds no hope of winning Australian selection for September’s T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

“I haven’t thought about it at all – my international days are pretty much numbered,” Tait told reporters in Adelaide on Friday.

“I don’t think they (Australia) would consider me, to be honest, so I don’t think I need to worry about it.

“I haven’t played cricket for Australia since God knows when.

“I have chosen a new path to play Twenty20 cricket around the world, you just sort of slip off the radar and I think both parties are happy with it.”

Tait played three Test matches before quitting in January 2008, citing burnout.

The fast bowler continued to play 50-over cricket until retiring from that format in March last year – his last appearance for Australia.

Tait said he was content with becoming a hired gun in the T20 format.

“I make less money now than what I was when playing for Australia, that is for sure,” he said.

“It’s the whole body thing, mate – in a wonderful world, if things had gone a bit different, it would have been nice to play a bit more Test cricket or play a few more one-day games.

“But I played in two (50 over) World Cups – I played in a winning World Cup and I’m pretty satisfied with that.”
