Over rate concerns Boof at Gabba Test

There was no shortage of issues to frustrate Australian coach Darren Lehmann at the second Test against India at the Gabba.

But Lehmann reckoned slow over rates were up there – not that he was taking aim at new Test skipper Steve Smith.

Lehmann had plenty to worry about by stumps on day one of the second Test.

Mitch Marsh (hamstring) topped a growing injury list of Australian bowlers at a stinking hot Gabba as India cruised to 4-311 thanks to opener Murali Vijay’s cracking 144.

Suddenly Australia’s 26-year unbeaten streak at the Gabba appears under threat.

Yet Lehmann still appeared miffed by the over rate after a remarkable run of bowler breakdowns, meandering security staff and drink breaks on a scorching hot day limited India’s innings to 83 overs on Wednesday.

Asked what he thought of Australia’s rate of 11 overs an hour, Lehmann said: “I don’t particularly like it.

“There’s time wasting going on everywhere.

“We’ve got to get better at that as a side, us, (as well as) the ground, people waiting for people in (corporate) boxes, security behind sightscreens, two drinks breaks, all those things that come into it for different reasons.

“And we had a lot of injuries on the ground.

“Our over rate finished on zero but we lost six (sic) overs. Hopefully we get better at it.”

One cricket journalist tweeted at stumps on Wednesday: “We’re 7 overs short.

“Why not just pour hot coffee on the fans who braved the heat to be here?”

But it will be Australia – skippered by Smith in injured Michael Clarke’s absence – feeling the heat when play resumes on day two.

Ajinkya Rahane is not out 75 and Rohit Sharma unbeaten on 26 in an unbroken 50-run fifth wicket stand.

Test debutant Josh Hazlewood has 2-44 but battled severe cramps before leaving the field early on Wednesday.
