Australia have failed to make the best of a small ground at Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo, scoring 6-139 after being told to bat first in Saturday’s World Twenty20 warm-up game against New Zealand.

Openers Shane Watson (27) and David Warner (24), No.6 Glenn Maxwell (24) and wicketkeeper Matt Wade (25 not out) all got starts for Australia.

Warner’s 24 came off just 14 deliveries and included two sixes.

Mike Hussey departed soon after for five while Cameron White, elevated to No.4, was caught at deep square leg for eight.

Skipper George Bailey was fourth man out with the score on 62, caught sweeping for three.

The prize wicket came in the 12th over when Watson, with wickets tumbling all around him, popped a simple catch to mid-off from the bowling of Doug Bracewell (2-31) at 5-71.

Maxwell continued his good form while Dan Christian and Wade smashed 22 from the last one-and-a-half overs.

Christian’s unbeaten 11 came off just three deliveries, including a six and a four.

Adam Milne claimed 2-27 while spinners Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum took one wicket each.

Australia recalled pace bowler Clint McKay from a hamstring injury ahead of their first Group B match against Ireland on Wednesday. Bailey’s side also have a second warm-up game against England on Monday.

In-form quick Mitchell Starc has been rested from the side that beat Pakistan by 94 runs in their third T20 International in Dubai on Monday night.

Experienced middle-order batsman David Hussey has also been left out for a second successive game.
