New Zealand will need to score 112 in overcast conditions in Dunedin to win the opening Test against the West Indies after bowling the tourists out for 507.
Starting the day on 6-443 the West Indies lost double century-maker Darren Bravo early on the fifth day at the University Oval and the hosts wrapped up the innings 23 minutes before lunch.
In the 3.1 overs before the interval New Zealand lost opener Peter Fulton to go to the break on 3-1 in gloomy conditions with rain threatening.
Earlier, Bravo was bowled by a low skidder from Trent Boult which snuck under his bat after he had added eight runs to his overnight score of 210.
It ended a marathon 569 minute innings of defiance which had ensured the visitors made New Zealand bat again.
Boult’s 10th ball of the day did the damage, ending a 90-run stand with his captain Darren Sammy.
The seven-over spell from Boult tested the West Indians but it was often a case of almost, but not quite for the hosts with edges falling short of fielders and uppish shots not going to hand.
When Tino Best did offer Fulton a chance at mid-on the leaping Cantabrian could not pull down the catch.
Fulton’s drop was the fourth catch put down by the home side in the innings.
The West Indies began the final day with a 47-run lead with four wickets in hand.
