Test batsman Shaun Marsh registered his third straight duck as Western Australia were skittled by NSW for their ninth lowest innings total of 82 in their Sheffield Shield clash in Canberra.
NSW lost the early wicket of opener Ryan Carters (3) to WA quick Michael Hogan in reply, and were 1-19 at tea.
The Warriors’ dismal first innings total is a huge blow to their finals hopes, as they are locked on 26 points alongside NSW and South Australia for the final round of Shield matches.
The Warriors failed to make the most of captain Adam Voges’ decision to bat first on the Manuka Oval deck, with their top five batsman scraping just 14 runs between them to be reduced to 5-15 in the eighth over.
NSW paceman Doug Bollinger (4-28), who was in the Australian squad for the South African tour, was responsible for creating massive problems for the Warriors alongside fellow quick Josh Hazlewood (4-14), who recorded career best first class figures.
Following his 148 against South Africa in the first Test, Marsh’s run of ducks was extended to three when he was bowled second ball by Bollinger.
Bollinger also claimed the prized scalp of WA skipper Voges, as well as Ashton Agar, who helped slow the rot by hanging on for 40 balls before being trapped on the back pad.
Hazlewood opened his account by trapping opener Marcus North LBW for a second ball duck in the second over, before dismissing WA’s other opener Cam Bancroft soon after.
He then had Marcus Harris (8) caught by NSW captain Steve Smith at second slip, and then finished off WA’s innings by knocking over tailender Michael Hogan.
Australia’s No.1 Test spinner Nathan Lyon claimed NSW’s other two wickets, dismissing the Warriors’ highest scoring batsmen Ashton Turner (25) and keeper Sam Whiteman.
