New Zealand vs Australia Preview

After finishing second in their respective groups, New Zealand and Australia set up a dream T20 World Cup final showdown with pulsating – and strikingly similar – semi-final upsets.

The Black Caps were set 167 to win by tournament favourites England in the first semi. Tim Southee (1/24) was a clear standout among the Kiwi bowlers.

Star duo Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson went cheaply and the New Zealand chase seemed well behind the eight-ball until the latter overs. But Devon Conway (46 off 38) helped steady the ship, Jimmy Neesham (27 off 11) produced a vital cameo and new opening hero Daryl Mitchell (72* off 47) carried his bat and finished the job in spectacular style as the underdogs got home with six balls and five wickets to spare.

The Kiwis plundered the last 57 runs off just 24 balls.

Pakistan made 4/176 against Australia in the second semi. Adam Zampa (1/22) bowled superbly but veteran seamers Mitchell Starc (2/38) and Josh Hazlewood (0/49) were too expensive.

Skipper Aaron Finch was out third ball, but David Warner (49 off 30) and Mitch Marsh (28 off 22) kept the chase on track. Steve Smith’s and Glenn Maxwell’s lean form trot continued, but Marcus Stoinis (40* off 31) played a crucial innings.

No.7 Matthew Wade (41* off 17) was the hero, though, smashing three straight sixes to run down the target with an over left.

Australia boast a dominant 10-4 record against New Zealand in T20Is. But three of the Kiwis’ wins came in their 3-2 series victory over the Aussies at home earlier this year. Ish Sodhi’s 13 wickets earned him Player of the Series honours, while Guptill (218 runs at 43.60) and Finch (197 runs at 49.25) were the standout batsmen with a pair of half-centuries each.

There is nothing between the teams in terms of experience, form and line-up balance. Australia bat deeper Warner (236 runs at 47.20) has been their only batsman to regularly produce runs, while NZ opening duo Mitchell (197 runs at 39.40) and Guptill (180 at 30) have taken turns anchoring innings. Australia also boast a deeper bowling attack but New Zealand’s has been more consistent as a unit.

The in-form Conway is a key loss for the Kiwis with a broken hand. The explosive Tim Seifert appears the likely keeper-batsman replacement.

Australia have been installed as $1.66 favourites. There’s a sense that the 2015 ODI World Cup final rout provides them with a psychological edge; six Aussies and four Kiwis from that match will line up in the T20 decider.

But the Black Caps aren’t the No.1-ranked Test and ODI team by accident. Unflappable and dogged, the Kiwis invariably punch above their weight and look tremendous value to add more silverware to their cabinet in Dubai.
