New West Indies spinner Suril Narine and their old hand Chris Gayle have again proved a headache for the New Zealand cricketers in the first Test in Antigua.

The tourists were dismissed for 351 in the 12th over after lunch on the second day and the West Indies openers raced to 87 without loss after tea.

At the start of play New Zealand had resumed on 4-234, built around Martin Guptill’s 97 on the first day, and would have been eyeing a score closer to 400.

But it was Narine’s innings, and the offspinner took 5-132 in just his second Test, despite the New Zealanders saying beforehand he would be less of a threat because they would not have to attack him in the Test matches as they did in the limited overs games.

Wickets fell cheaply, with nightwatchman Neil Wagner dismissed for four, Kane Williamson for 19, Dean Brownlie 23, Kruger van Wyk 11 and Daniel Vettori for 17.

The Black Caps were helped to their total by some lusty late hitting from number 10 batsman Doug Bracewell, who struck 39 from 31 balls.

Chris Martin was not out on four when Bracewell was the last man out.

West Indian opener Gayle, returning to Test cricket for the first time in more than 18 months continued his form, hitting 10 fours on his way to his 50. He cracked four fours in Martin’s first over and was dropped by Daniel Flynn at point on 36.

The West Indies went to tea at 72.
