Mickey Arthur named Tallawahs coach

Former Australia coach Mickey Arthur will make his return to top-level cricket with Caribbean Premier League champions the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Arthur was confirmed as coach of the Tallawahs on Wednesday – his first appointment since he was sensationally sacked by Australia just 16 days before last summer’s Ashes.

While Australia lost that series 3-1, replacement coach Darren Lehmann has since overseen a 5-0 Ashes whitewash before beating South Africa away.

South African Arthur had been mooted as a possible applicant for the vacant England team director position, but has distanced himself from such speculation after setting up his own academy in his adopted home in Perth.

Another former Australia coach, Tim Nielsen, was also named to coach CPL side the Antigua Hawksbills.

Matthew Maynard, a former England assistant coach and Glamorgan coach, will return to lead the St Lucia Zouks.

“We’re extremely pleased to have secured such a strong line up of talented and respected coaches for this year’s tournament,” CPL director of cricket Tom Moody said in a statement on the tournament’s official website.

“With their technical expertise, along with guidance from our legendary mentors, the standard of cricket this year is set to be higher than ever.”

The CPL season is due to begin in July.
