McCullum gets double-century

Skipper Brendon McCullum has recorded his second Test double-century to guide New Zealand to 7-473 at lunch on day two of the first cricket Test against India in Auckland.

McCullum reached the milestone in style, with two boundaries in the last over before the break.

He hit one delivery from spinner Ravindra Jadeja back over the bowler for a six, before sweeping the final ball of the session for a four.

That got him to 202 not out, 23 runs short of his highest Test score of 225, which also came against India, in Hyderabad in late 2010.

New Zealand resumed the second morning at 4-329 and McCullum and Corey Anderson wasted little time in pushing along the home side’s tally.

There was a regular flow of boundaries, Anderson plundering three in one Ishant Sharma over.

Two of those came as he pulled bouncers from the seamer through a wide-open on-side field.

However, it was Ishant, who has been the pick of the Indian attack, who secured the breakthrough after McCullum and Anderson had added 55 at quicker than a run a minute.

Anderson, on 77, played inside the line of an angled delivery and found himself being given out leg-before to end a partnership worth 133.

That setback didn’t hinder McCullum, who continued the run flow.

But he then saw BJ Watling go for one after the keeper edged a catch to the slips to give Ishant his fourth wicket of the innings.

New batsman Tim Southee had an intriguing battle with Ishant, who troubled him with successive bouncers.

The Black Caps paceman decided to begin swinging and top-edged two sixes later in the same over.

Having got to 28 off 21 balls, Southee was bowled by seamer Mohammed Shami.
