Glenn Maxwell will jet into Chennai this weekend as the Indian Premier League’s latest million-dollar man but Australia’s coaching staff are determined to make sure the young allrounder keeps his feet on the ground.
The 24-year-old Victorian, who burst into Australia’s Twenty20 and one-day sides in 2012, is a contender for his Test debut in Chennai on February 22.
However with his success at last Sunday’s IPL auction, where the Mumbai Indians claimed the offspinner for $US1 million ($A978,000), the challenge for Maxwell is to keep his head screwed on the right way.
Maxwell will find Indian fans and media are just as keen to talk about the lucrative IPL T20 competition starting in April as they are to discuss the battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
And Australia’s acting head coach Steve Rixon – a tough-as-nails former Test wicketkeeper, who’s also an assistant coach with two-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings – says Maxwell will be given every assistance to keep his mind on the job.
“Glenn is very, very delighted with his recent pick-up. It puts a lot of pressure on him so he knows he has to perform,” Rixon told a media conference in Chennai on Saturday.
“He’ll be coming over here with a lot of expectation from himself and also the public. We’ve got to make sure he stays calm and actually stays with the program we’ve set him.
“That is to continue to become a very good spinner, advance his batting which needs a little bit of curbing on different occasions and continue as arguably one of the best fielders in world cricket.
“So he just needs to keep his hat on the right way and I think everyone will get a good result out of it and maybe Mumbai will as well.”
Maxwell will play in Australia’s opening two-day tour match starting on Tuesday in Chennai.
He’ll need a good score in next week’s two-day game as fellow allrounders Moises Henriques and Steve Smith will also be keen to impress selectors.
While Maxwell’s profile is growing by the minute in India, it seems ABC radio commentator Jim Maxwell has a bigger one.
“How good is Jim Maxwell? He went for one million dollars with the Mumbai Indians,” an Indian reporter asked.
Rixon joked: “If Jim Maxwell’s getting a million, Glenn Maxwell must be very disappointed.”
