Shaun Marsh’s impressive cricket resurrection has reached another milestone, with the batsman to captain WA in their Sheffield Shield opener.
Marsh will lead the Warriors in a Shield match for the first time this Wednesday in the round-one match against Victoria at the MCG.
The powerful left-hand batsman had previously captained his state in a one-dayer.
Marsh will fill in for Adam Voges, who is in India with the national one-day team.
The 30-year-old is pushing for Ashes selection after impressive form this month in the national one-day series.
He scored 119 against Queensland and also scored two 50s.
Marsh was supposed to also play in India, but a hamstring strain took him out of the tour and also the first two games of the domestic one-day competition.
“It’s a huge honour and I know it’s going to be a challenge for me, but it’s one I’m looking forward to, to help guide the young guys and get a good feeling in the group, with a belief that we can go over there and win the game,” Marsh said.
“It’s pleasing for me to have worked so hard and start to see the rewards on the field in my performances, but to captain this great state is such an honour.
“I want to be a leader on the field, but it’s important that I try to help these guys off the field as well and help to lead them in the right direction for what we’re trying to achieve.”
Rising star Will Bosisto will also make his first-class debut.
Squad: Shaun Marsh (capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Will Bosisto, Hilton Cartwright, Michael Hogan, Jaron Morgan, Marcus North, Nathan Rimmington, John Rogers, Sam Whiteman.
