Marsh regains form in BBL

Shaun Marsh’s return to form in the Big Bash League looks set to put him right back in the mix for Australia’s upcoming limited overs fixtures, but for now he’s focused on helping the Perth Scorchers to the finals.

It’s no secret that Marsh’s latter half of 2012 didn’t go to plan.

He was in poor form for the Scorchers in the Twenty20 Champions League in South Africa, and then subsequently left out of the Western Australia team upon returning home for Sheffield Shield and one-day action.

On and off field performances in South Africa were both behind that decision, but the 29-year-old who has played 36 one-day internationals and eight Twenty20 games for Australia has now regained his form and confidence after another hamstring injury in the BBL.

The left-hander had another good knock in the Scorchers’ commanding nine wicket win over the Sydney Thunder at the WACA Ground on Friday night with an unbeaten 56 off 45 balls hitting six fours and two sixes.

“Obviously it has been a pretty tough start, but I’m starting to feel really good out there now,” Marsh said.

“I have worked really hard since South Africa to get it right and I’m just happy with the way my batting is going at the moment.

“My confidence is certainly back now as well.”

The Scorchers have won four of their last five games to be in second position on the BBL table.

Not only has their batting improved but the bowlers have lifted as well led by opening pair Alfonso Thomas and Friday’s man-of-the-match Jason Behrendorff.

“He (Behrendorff) has been fantastic since coming into the team,” Marsh said.

“He got some pretty big wickets, obviously the key one of (Chris) Gayle who is probably the best T20 batter in the world, so to get him and (Matt) Prior out early really set us up.

“We’ve got a great bowling combination now up front with Jason and Alfonso doing really well for us.

“Our spinners are also playing a part… so we have a really good mix.”

The Scorchers can qualify for the semi-finals even with a loss to the Adelaide Strikers on Thursday at Adelaide Oval, but Marsh is confident they can win and guarantee their place.

“Destiny is in our own hands. We go to Adelaide now and if we win, we play finals,” Marsh said.

“They are a really dangerous side with a lot of key spinners and I think (Saeed) Ajmal is going to be coming back into the team for our game, so we will have to combat him.

“They have some dangerous T20 players so we will have to be at our best to beat them.”
