Lyon set to return for South Australia

Test spinner Nathan Lyon is expected to return from a thigh-muscle strain for South Australia in Saturday’s one-day game against Victoria at the MCG.

However South Australia coach Darren Berry says he’ll seek permission from Cricket Australia’s medical staff before naming the 24-year-old, who last played in the fourth Test against India in Adelaide almost three weeks ago when he claimed five wickets for the match.

“We don’t know whether the Cricket Australia people will allow him to play on Saturday,” Berry said on Wednesday.

“We’re trying to find out whether they are contemplating him for the Australian one-day side as well which I know was on the cards at the start of the series.

“He had a quad strain but he has been here, training every day running and bowling. He’s ready to go. We’re pretty confident he’ll play on Saturday.”

South Australia are desperate to win their last round-robin game in the one-day domestic competition as they eye off a place in the final on February 25.

Lyon was in a 13-man squad for this week’s Sheffield Shield clash with the Bushrangers at the MCG but was rested for the encounter which finished on Wednesday in a 34-run win for the home side.

Australia’s selectors have named a squad for Friday’s one-day game against Sri Lanka at the SCG and the clash with India two days later in Brisbane.

The home side’s next game in the tri-series is against Sri Lanka in Hobart on February 24.
