Lyon, Hilf star as Aust rout Board XI

Australia need just 86 to win their three-day tour match after a solid bowling display against the WICB President’s XI in Barbados on Tuesday.

Nathan Lyon and Ben Hilfenhaus starred as Australia rolled the hosts for just 98 in their second innings, with the pair claiming eight wickets on a deteriorating 3Ws pitch.

Lyon claimed four wickets to finish with 4-17 off seven overs while Hilfenhaus bowled two spells to end up with exceptional figures of 4-8 from seven overs.

Australia’s only black mark in the field was a moment of disagreement between umpire Gregory Brathwaite and Ricky Ponting over whether the veteran Australian had pouched a spectacular slips catch, though that incident was quickly forgotten as the hosts collapsed.

Lyon removed the man Ponting thought he had caught the over before – batsman Jason Holder (8) – and then Hilfenhaus removed Kevin McClean (0) and Devon Johnson (0) in consecutive deliveries as the WICB team lost three wickets without scoring.

Hilfenhaus then took the catch that ended the hosts’ innings to give Peter Siddle (1-10) his sole wicket while James Pattinson also had one wicket.

The hosts had earlier restricted Australia to 9(dec)-214, a first innings lead of 13 runs, with Peter Forrest the only batsman to pass 50 for the tourists, making an unbeaten 53.

Resuming on an overnight score of 2-81, Australia made a quick start before Michael Clarke (30) fell slashing at a wide delivery by McClean (1-27).

Ponting (13) fell shortly after and Peter Nevill (25) was dismissed on the stroke of lunch as Australia reached the break 5-162.

Spin bowlers Nkrumah Bonner (3-43) and Ryan Austin (3-43) then worked their way through the tail before Clarke declared shortly after Forrest had reached his half-century with the third six of his innings.
