Lee set to stay with Sydney Sixers in BBL

The Sydney Sixers are hopeful Brett Lee will announce next week that he’s staying on with the defending Big Bash League champions for another season.

When Lee announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday, he said he hoped he hadn’t played his last game at the SCG and it appears the proud New South Welshman will get his wish despite also turning down a Cricket NSW state contract last month.

Lee said “we’ll wait and see” when asked if he’ll remain in pink for 2012-13, but it’s believed he’s among a raft of signings the Sixers are hoping to announce in coming days.

With teenage sensation Pat Cummins departing to the Perth Scorchers, the Sixers are hoping veteran pace bowler Lee can again lead their attack.

“I really enjoyed playing last year. The Sixers last year was magnificent so we’ll wait and see what happens with that,” said Lee, who is looking forward to spending more time with son Preston and working on his music and fashion interests.

“I think (the SCG) means everything. To me, it’s the home of cricket. Being a New South Welshman and watching my older brother Shane play out here for a number of years, I dreamt and wished one day I’d be out there.

“(I’ll still play) Big Bash and IPL, so I’m not totally losing my cricket thrill or that chance to play cricket. Hopefully, I’ll get the opportunity to play out here again.”

Deciding to call it quits after returning home from Australia’s one-day series loss to England with a calf tear, Lee reflected on his highs and lows in the game on Friday.

He retires a World Cup and Ashes winner, with the fourth-best record of any Australian bowler in Tests and the equal best with Glenn McGrath for one-day internationals.

However, it was Australia’s heart-breaking two-run loss to England at Edgbaston in the 2005 Ashes which has provided one of his most lasting cricket memories.
