Veteran Australian paceman Brett Lee has announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 35-year-old Lee called a media conference for 1pm (AEST) at the SCG but confirmed the news shortly beforehand on Twitter.

“It’s official, I have retired from international cricket! Thanks for all your love and support. It’s been an amazing 13 years,” Lee posted on the social networking website.

Lee suffered a calf muscle strain that resulted in an early departure from Australia’s recent one-day tour to the UK, the latest in a long line of injury setbacks.

He also endured side strains, stress fractures, ankle problems and appendicitis throughout a career that netted 310 Test wickets at 30.81 from 76 matches and 380 one-day international scalps at 23.36 from 221 matches.

He was not offered a national contract in Cricket Australia’s latest round of agreements, and decided not to take up a deal with NSW.

He finishes up one wicket short of Glenn McGrath’s Australian record of 381 ODI wickets.
