Law gets audition for batting coach post

Cricket Australia (CA) might be looking for a third batting coach in two months after replacing Justin Langer with Centre of Excellence boss Stuart Law as a “try before you buy” measure.

Langer on Wednesday vacated the post to become Western Australia’s new head coach, prompting Law’s short-term appointment for the remaining five home Tests this season.

The former Test batsman and long-time Queensland captain worked beside Langer with the Australian team during the drawn first Test at the Gabba and will continue to carry on both his roles.

Law returned to Brisbane this year to be more settled with his family after stints as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh coach as well as experience in England.

He had success in helping coach both the Australian men’s and women’s U19 teams to finals at this year’s ICC tournaments.

CA performance manager Pat Howard said the remaining two home Tests against South Africa and the three-match series against Sri Lanka would help decide whether Law remained as batting coach heading into important showdowns in India and England.

“We’re in a unique place where you can try before you buy for both, for Stuart and the team,” Howard said.

“It’s going to present some challenges – Stuart has had a fantastic eight or nine months here (at the Centre of Excellence).”

Law scored an unbeaten 54 in his one Test for Australia in 1994-95 and also captained the Bulls to their first five Sheffield Shield triumphs from 1995-96 to 2001-02.
