Jayawardene doesn’t care who leads Aussies

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene says whoever is captaining Australia won’t change his team’s approach going into Friday’s one-dayer at the SCG.

Jayawardene said Australian selectors had made the right call by choosing Ricky Ponting ahead of David Warner as skipper with Michael Clarke out injured.

But the veteran batsman believes whoever is in charge, his team will face a strong opponent in a game the tourists need to win to avoid falling further behind Australia and India in the triangular series.

“Definitely they’ll put a decent side on the park, they’re an experienced group of cricketers and we just need to concentrate on that and play a good game of cricket,” Jayawardene told reporters on Thursday.

“You always tend to in a situation like this go back to somebody you trust, and it’s a short period as well.

Jayawardene’s team desperately need a win in the one-day series having played three games so far with just Tuesday’s tie with India to show for their efforts.

With India and Australia having both posted two wins each so far, the Sri Lankan captain knows his team need to deliver on Friday night.

“It’s a crucial game for us and every game is important,” he said.

“I can’t predict how many wins we need to get into the finals. What’s in our control is to try and win matches.

“If we can play the way we did in the last three games and control certain situations better … we’ll get those wins under our belt.”
