Injury woes don’t faze WA for shield final

Western Australia are adamant they can defy a horror injury toll to claim the 20 wickets needed to win the Sheffield Shield in the final against Victoria.

The Warriors will enter the five-day match in Hobart on Saturday without three of their best quick bowlers; left-armer Jason Behrendorff, veteran Michael Hogan, and Ryan Duffield.

Left-arm quick Joel Paris, who starred during the Warriors’ One-Day Cup title-winning campaign, is also out for the season.

Nathan Rimmington was expected to struggle for game time at the start of the summer.

But the former Queenslander now holds the key to WA’s chances after tallying a team-high 32 wickets during the season.

All-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile will also shoulder a heavy workload, while Simon Mackin is set to return from a rib injury after a month out.

Table-topping Victoria only need a draw to secure the Shield crown.

But WA skipper Adam Voges is confident his team have enough weapons to take 20 wickets even if Victoria play for a draw.

“Five days is a long time,” Voges said.

“We’re probably missing three frontline bowlers, so we’ve been tested, there’s no doubt about that.

“But the fact we’ve gone in with four fast bowlers and (spinner) Ashton Agar will give us enough there to take 20 wickets.”

WA coach Justin Langer said his bowling group’s ability to cope with injuries was nothing short of remarkable.

“When we lost those players, particularly the left armers … I thought we might struggle to bowl sides out,” Langer said.

“But the way they have stepped up is a credit to the program. They are so fit and strong, and they don’t surrender.”

Mackin is set to replace either David Moody or Andrew Tye in the final XI.

The Bushrangers will be boosted by the return of star paceman James Pattinson (hamstring), while opener Chris Rogers is also set to play despite straining his glute in last week’s crushing win over Tasmania.

WA won the one-day final in Sydney earlier this season, while the Perth Scorchers took home the BBL crown in Canberra.

Voges said having to travel for a final held no fears for his side.

“We’ve overcome adversity for most of the season. A lot of things have been thrown at us, but we’ve managed to overcome them most of the time,” Voges said.

“The resilience of this group is something pretty special. We’ll overcome any obstacle that may come our way.”

WA squad: Adam Voges (capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Tom Beaton, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Marcus Harris, Michael Klinger, Simon Mackin, Shaun Marsh, David Moody, Nathan Rimmington, Andrew Tye, Sam Whiteman.
