India make 503, Maxwell takes four wickets

Australia’s debutant offspinner Glenn Maxwell claimed 4-127 as India were bowled out for 503 in their first innings on day three of the second Test on Monday.

The home side enjoyed a lead of 266 runs at tea with the Hyderabad pitch starting to crack and offer assistance to the spinners.

Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty removed three tailenders to finish with 3-131.

India resumed on 1-311 on Monday and finally lost their second wicket at 387, which led to a mini collapse of 3-17.

The 370-run partnership between Murali Vijay (167) and Cheteshwar Pujara (204) is the highest by an Indian pair for the second wicket in Tests.

Vijay was caught at leg slip off the bowling of Maxwell, who had 0-55 from 10 overs on day two.

Pujara completed his second double century in just his 11th Test. The 25-year-old departed with the score on 393 after hooking a delivery from James Pattinson to fine leg.

Their partnership is also the third-highest by any country for any wicket against Australia.

Sachin Tendulkar fell in controversial fashion, caught down legside off Pattinson for seven after a review by the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus.

Skipper MS Dhoni, following his brutal 224 in the first Test in Chennai, smashed 44 off 43 balls before becoming Maxwell’s second victim.

Maxwell also dismissed Ravindra Jadeja caught and bowled for 10.

Doherty, in his first Test since 2010, needed 42.2 overs before getting his first breakthrough of the innings as Ravi Ashwin was caught at second slip.

Doherty struck again in his next over to remove Harbhajan Singh (duck).

Maxwell continued India’s late collapse when Virat Kohli (34) was brilliantly caught at leg slip by Ed Cowan.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (10) was stumped to Doherty’s bowling as India’s last six wickets fell for 43 runs.

Dhoni’s Indians lead the four-match series one-nil.
