India A make 451 against Australia

India A continued to pile on the runs against Australia before finally being bowled out for 451 at tea on day two of their warm-up game in Chennai on Sunday.

Spinners Xavier Doherty (3-108) and Ashton Agar (3-107) claimed three wickets each in a worrying performance from the Aussie attack less than a week out from the first Test in Chennai starting on Friday.

No.4 Manoj Tiwary resumed on 77 and was dismissed for 129, joining ex-Test opener Gautam Gambhir (112) as a century-maker in the match after Gambhir dominated the first day of play.

Tiwary and CM Gautam resumed on Sunday at 4-338 as Australia took the second new ball from the outset and struck in the fourth over of the day when Gautam was caught behind off Peter Siddle’s bowling for 38.

Siddle (1-40 off 18 overs) had the India A batsmen on the hop and dug in another short ball in his next over which Jalaj Saxena on zero edged to gully where Nathan Lyon dropped a low chance.

Saxena (30 not out) and Tiwary shared a sixth-wicket stand of 74 before Tiwary top-edged a sweep shot to square leg off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon (2-113 off 30.4).

Agar, 19, backed up from his 0-78 off 13 overs on day one to remove three tailenders late in the innings.

The left-armer dismissed Rakesh Dhurv (21) and Vinay Kumar (0) in successive deliveries and also claimed the wicket of No.10 Manpreet Gony (2) in his next over.

Siddle’s pace partners Mitchell Starc (0-44 off 20) and Moises Henriques (1-30 off 16) bowled tightly but were unable to make significant inroads into the home side’s batting lineup.

The lack of penetration from Australia’s three spinners on a turning pitch could cause a re-think as selectors consider whether to play two specialist spinners or perhaps only one for the first Test.
