Cricket’s governing body the ICC on Sunday fined India pace bowler Ishant Sharma for his fiery send-off to Australian tailender James Pattinson during the fourth Test in Delhi.
India won the match by six wickets to clinch a four-nil series sweep.
No.10 batsman Pattinson reached 11 with a beautiful square-driven boundary off the bowling of Sharma in Australia’s second innings.
Sharma couldn’t help himself after rattling the Victorian’s stumps with the next delivery, giving the batsman directions to the change rooms with an aggressive wave of the arms.
The tall quick has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee.
“Sharma admitted to the charge and accepted the sanction imposed by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle without the need to convene a disciplinary hearing,” the ICC said in a statement.
Sharma was found to have breached the ICC’s code of conduct which relates to gesturing or pointing to the pavilion upon the dismissal of a batsman.
“The incident happened on the fourth ball of the 45th over when Sharma, after dismissing Australia batsman James Pattinson, repeatedly gestured towards the pavilion while in his follow through,” the ICC said.
Madugalle described Sharma’s actions as inappropriate.
“I’m sure Ishant will learn from this incident and ensure such actions are not be repeated in the future,” he said.
Four umpires including the on-field officials Richard Kettleborough and Aleem Dar all laid the charge against Sharma.
