I pick Aussie batting order: Clarke

Darren Lehmann has been the mouthpiece for the Australian cricket team since his appointment as coach and selector on the eve of the Ashes series.

But captain Michael Clarke has made one thing clear – he picks the batting order.

Lehmann came out before the Somerset tour match and declared Shane Watson a certainty to open.

Before the Worcestershire tune up match he offered another piece of the jigsaw by announcing Chris Rogers as a lock to partner Watson at the top of the innings.

But when asked about his batting line-up for the first Test at Nottingham starting on Wednesday, Clarke said it would be a decision made by him and not the coach.

“I haven’t picked the batting order yet but I will do at some stage.

“I’ll probably announce it the morning of the game.

“Chris and Shane have certainly put their hand up as opening batters in the tour games but in regards to the batting order it hasn’t been selected at this stage.”

Clarke isn’t even sure of his own place even though he batted at No.4 in both warm-ups, scoring two 50s and a 100.

He says a lot of pressure has been taken off his shoulders by no longer being a selector.

When asked about the likely formation of the bowling attack, Clarke said conditions would, as usual, play a decisive factor.

“The selectors have had a chance to look at all the quicks, now we have to pick the best attack for the conditions once we get to Notts,” he said.

Under-pressure Peter Siddle is no certainty of being picked for Trent Bridge, but in his favour is his ability to bowl long spells and his proven record of being the heart and soul of the attack.

“Form certainly helps but Sidds has been a strike weapon for us over the last couple of years,” Clarke said.

“The selectors will pick the best attack. You don’t necessarily have to be one of the best bowlers, it will be a complementary attack that helps us have success in the conditions we’re about to face.

“I think (long spells) is one of his strengths. but they will need to pick an attack not an individual bowler.”
