The ultra-consistent “Mr Cricket” Mike Hussey hit an unbeaten 115 in Australia’s 5-450 declared on day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
In reply, Sri Lanka were 0-21 at tea at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval.
Australia’s batsmen scored 151 in 41 overs on Saturday for the loss of skipper Michael Clarke (74) after resuming on 4-299.
Clarke was caught at first slip by Kumar Sangakkara off the bowling of Shaminda Eranga (1-90) in the third over of the day. Sri Lanka’s only other wicket-taker was Chanaka Welegedara (3-130).
Clarke leads all run-scorers in Tests in 2012 with 1432 at a staggering average of 102.28, with possibly three more Test innings to come before the end of the year.
The Aussie skipper is only 112 runs shy of Ricky Ponting’s Australian record of 1544 runs in 2005.
Clarke and Hussey added 106 for the fifth wicket before Hussey and Matthew Wade (68 not out) shared an unbroken partnership of 146.
Hussey reached his 19th Test century and fourth for 2012 in spectacular style, hitting a pull shot on 96 to deep mid-wicket where Angelo Mathews fumbled the catch and watched the ball dribble over the rope for a four.
The 37-year-old West Australian raised both arms in triumph and has carved out an impressive record in six Tests against Sri Lanka, hitting 877 runs at an average of 125.28.
Hussey hit eight fours and one six from 184 balls in a brilliant display while Wade also handled the slow pitch with ease.
Hussey has scored 833 runs at 59.50 in 10 Tests in 2012.
The first session was delayed by 50 minutes because of rain and the second session was delayed by a further 80 minutes.
