South Australia debutant Phil Hughes is all that stands between Queensland recording a big first-innings lead at tea on day two of the Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.
Hughes is currently 63 not out, from 69 deliveries, but has had no support from the other Redbacks batsmen and the visitors currently stand at five for 98 in reply to Queensland’s 398 all out.
Fellow opener Michael Klinger was dismissed for one, leg before to Alister McDermott (2-12), who soon afterwards claimed the wicket of Tom Cooper for five.
Queensland skipper James Hopes (2-8) accounted for the next two wickets of Callum Ferguson (11) and Travis Head (4).
Sam Miller fell to Luke Feldman (1-46) to round off a miserable performance from South Australia.
Hughes has hit 11 fours all around the ground looking as accomplished as Usman Khawaja did in making 88 on day one, albeit in far more batsman-friendly conditions.
Queensland came into day two in a potentially precarious position at five for 202, but Ben Cutting’s dashing hundred put them firmly in control.
Cutting hit 109 runs off 78 deliveries, including twelve fours and four sixes. James Hopes (47), Chris Hartley (34) and Cameron Boyce (31) also helped lift the Bulls’ total to a potentially match-winning one.
