Australian one-day squad batsmen Phil Hughes and Callum Ferguson each failed to build on a start for South Australia on the eve of their departure for the seven-match series in India.
The Redbacks made 6-232 at Bankstown Oval in their one day match against Victoria on Friday, compiling a series of handy partnerships after winning the toss.
A late innings sixth wicket stand of 64 between topscorer Sam Miller (47 not out off 67 balls), who was making his one-day debut for the Redbacks, and wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman (38 off 42) ensured SA made the first score of over 200 in three matches at the venue this season.
Opener Hughes (35 off 45 balls) looked well set when he chipped a Dan Christian delivery low to Aaron Finch at mid-on.
Ferguson (21 off 31), who on Tuesday got a late call up to replace injured captain Michael Clarke in the Australian squad, was trapped lbw by paceman Scott Boland (2-51 off 10).
Hughes and Michael Klinger (33 off 52) got the Redbacks off to a fine start with an opening stand of 69 off 15.3 overs.
Klinger, who is coming off a season with English county Gloucestershire, fell one over and four runs after Hughes, caught behind by Matthew Wade trying to cut spinner John Holland (1-39 off 10).
The Redbacks looked to be biding another promising partnership, when once again both batsmen fell in a short space of time.
Ferguson’s dismissal ended a 42-run stand and three balls and one run later, Tom Cooper (20 off 31) was caught behind off Boland.
Yet another developing partnership was nipped in the bud when SA captain Johan Botha (13 off 28) was well caught at mid on by John Hastings off Christian (2-41 off 10), following a stand of 32 with Miller.
