Home semi a must for Renegades: Berry

Cricket Australia is yet to announce whether Adelaide Strikers coach Darren Berry and Melbourne Renegades import Marlon Samuels will be asked for an explanation of their heated BBL exchange.

Berry was involved in an angry discussion with Samuels during the warm-ups for Wednesday night’s clash at Etihad Stadium.

Reports can be lodged with CA up until 24 hours after the match, which ended at 10.10pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood officials are continuing to look into the incident.

Berry refused to discuss the issue with reporters after the match.

Renegades coach Simon Helmot said he had no idea what happened between the pair, while the team’s media spokesman said Samuels was unable to front the media because he was too emotional.

Samuels had been under fire in recent weeks following an allegation from Brisbane Heat coach Darren Lehmann about the legality of the West Indies allrounder’s bowling action.

Berry praised the Renegades but says they should cross their fingers they get a home semi-final.

The Renegades jumped to the top of the BBL table following Wednesday’s 48-run victory which boosted their win-loss record to 5-1.

Captain Aaron Finch’s Renegades face a derby re-match with Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Sunday followed by a clash with defending champions Sydney Sixers at the SCG next Wednesday.

The semi-finals are on January 15 and 16.

The Renegades’ import spinners Samuels and Muttiah Muralitharan claimed three wickets each against the Strikers on a pitch that was slow and cracking up, which prompted the visitors to rest speedster Shaun Tait.

Samuels, Test world-record holder Murali and left-arm spinner Aaron O’Brien have claimed 23 wickets between them for the Renegades this season.

Wednesday’s win was a return to top form for the Renegades after they had been thrashed by 51 runs by Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground on December 29, when Murali failed to take a wicket.

“The way the two internationals owned the game with the ball was outstanding,” Finch said when asked about Samuels and Muralitharan.

“It’s certainly a strength of ours that we’ve got three players in our spinning arsenal that we can go to.”

Berry praised the Renegades’ spin trio.

“I think they’ve got a good formula in the game,” he said.

“It’s a big ground here. They’re very, very, very competitive, a very good side.

“We saw in Perth (on a faster deck) it didn’t suit them at all so they need to get a home semi-final and if they do they’re a real shot at it.

“But if they have to play away in a semi-final I don’t think their team is as suited.”
