Hilfenhaus recalled to one-day squad

Paceman Ben Hilfenhaus is back in the Australian one-day squad, further emphasising his stunning form this summer.

The Tasmanian was drafted into the squad to replace speedster Brett Lee, who is out for four to six weeks with a broken toe.

Hilfenhaus will go to Perth as cover for Friday’s match against Sri Lanka, but is likely to be in the 11 for the February 12 match in Adelaide against India.

He last played international one-day cricket in November 2009 during a tour of India.

The next Australian summer was a disaster thanks to a knee injury and he also struggled for wickets during last year’s home Ashes series loss.

After regaining his fitness, Hilfenhaus was recalled to the Test team for this summer’s series against India and starred as Australia thrashed the tourists 4-0.

The fast-medium bowler was the leading wicket-taker for the series, snaring 27 scalps at an average of only 17.22 as he showed career-best form.

But Australia are unlikely to change their attack for the Perth game against Sri Lanka.

The home side bowled out India for 151 on Sunday night at the MCG for an easy 65-run win.

Sunday’s win was also another step forward for Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

He top-scored with 67 and took two catches to win his second man-of-the-match award in three international games over the last week.

Wade took over from out-of-form gloveman Brad Haddin for last week’s two Twenty20 matches against India.

He was then named in the squad for Australia’s first three games of this one-day series against India and Sri Lanka.

Wade said it would be “a bad option” to start looking too far ahead about his national prospects.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s a pretty fickle game that we play,” he said.

Wade added the focus within the team discouraged any thoughts about what might happen beyond the next game.

“The environment I’m in, it’s all about the next game in the Australian cricket team,” he said.

“All our planning, all our meetings, all the stuff is pretty much for the next game we’re going to play.

“It’s easy to concentrate on the next thing coming up, instead of looking a long way forward.

“No-one speaks about tours down the track in the change rooms.”
