Gloom greets Aussie cricketers in UK

Gloomy weather in Cardiff could prevent Australia’s cricketers training outdoors at the start of their ICC Champions Trophy campaign.

Rain could force the Australians indoors for their first scheduled training session on Thursday.

“Hopefully the weather clears up otherwise we are going to be indoors doing some skill-based specific stuff,” opening batsman David Warner said.

“It’s very cold here … I don’t mind the place at all, it’s just when the sun comes out it’s a bit of a better place.”

Australia’s squad will spend the next week in Cardiff – and rain is forecast for much of it – with practice matches scheduled against the West Indies on Saturday and India on Tuesday.

They begin their Champions Trophy tournament against England on June 8, with group matches against New Zealand (June 12) and Sri Lanka (June 17) to follow.

This will be the last Champions Trophy staged, with Australia winners of the past two tournaments.

“Obviously we have won the previous two so hopefully we can get that third in a row and lock it up for good,” Warner said.
