England were fined for a slow over rate during their six-wicket win over New Zealand in the Super Eights group one match of the World Twenty20 here on Saturday.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a press release that England were found one over short.
“Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the fines after Stuart Broad’s side was ruled to be one over short of its target at the end of the match when time allowances were taken into consideration,” said the ICC.
In accordance with ICC code of conduct regulations governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.
As such, Broad was fined 20 per cent of his match fee while his players received 10-per-cent fines.
The offence is contrary to Article 2.5.1 of the code which relates to minor over-rate offences. The penalty was accepted by England without contest so there was no need for a hearing.
This becomes the first slow over rate offence in the World Twenty20.
Sri Lanka beat the West Indies by nine wickets to step closer to the semi-finals, also on Saturday.
Australia play South Africa and Pakistan meet arch rivals India to spark up the group two in Colombo on Sunday.
Top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The final is scheduled for Colombo on October 7.
