England failed to add to their overnight score with Jackson Bird knocking over the final wicket in the second over on day two.
Australia have put themselves in a strong position to win the fourth Test at Durham, and keep alive their hopes of drawing the series after England were rolled for 238 from 92 overs.
David Warner will be looking to cash in immediately in his return to opening, where he’ll partner Chris Rogers.
Demoted opener Shane Watson will instead come in at No.6.
Peter Siddle bowled a maiden and Bird a wicket maiden, as Australia’s bowlers wasted no time in finishing off England on day two.
There seemed a bit there for the quicks, and Australia’s top order will need to endure a tricky period to get the innings underway.
Bird bowled a brilliant over where he nearly tore through James Anderson with his first delivery, then struck him on the helmet with another, before crashing through his stumps on the final ball.
Anderson was out for a valuable 16 from 16, with Tim Bresnan the not out batsman with 12.
Nathan Lyon was the pick of the Australian bowlers, the spinner taking 4-42 on a deck that wasn’t offering much turn.
Bird celebrated his return to the team with tidy figures of 2-58, while Ryan Harris (2-70) picked up two lower order wickets.
Shane Watson and Peter Siddle took one wicket each.
England were sluggish on day one, scoring at just over 2.5 runs per over.
