England 2-98 in 1st Ashes Test

Australia backed up their selection bombshells by showing strong intent with the ball on the opening morning of the Ashes series in Nottingham.

James Pattinson and Peter Siddle made the big breakthroughs in an even first session at Trent Bridge, with England 2-98 at lunch after 26 overs.

Jonathan Trott was 37 not out and Kevin Pietersen unbeaten on 10 after England won the toss with the prospect of a good batting wicket.

Australia went within inches of taking a stranglehold on the first Test, when superstar Pietersen edged Pattinson down the legside when on one in the 23rd over.

But the ball dipped agonisingly under keeper Brad Haddin’s outstretched left glove and England remained 2-79.

Australia came out all guns blazing on Wednesday, but that was before a ball was even bowled.

Steve Smith was announced as the No.6, with David Warner paying the price for his drunken punch in a Birmingham bar last month.

But the major shock came when 19-year-old offspinner Ashton Agar was presented with his baggy green cap for a stunning Test debut, at the expense of Nathan Lyon.

Pattinson (1-31) didn’t take long to put his first stamp on the series, when he had dangerman Alastair Cook edging behind to Haddin on the last ball of the ninth over.

The England captain was drawn into the drive to be out for 13, with Pattinson swinging the ball away from him superbly.

Siddle came into the match under pressure after a poor lead-in, and was too wayward early on.

But the warrior of the Australian attack showed why he’s the No.6 bowler in Test cricket when he knocked over opener Joe Root (30) with a sensational outswinger which took the base of off stump.

Siddle beat Root’s outside edge with a perfect delivery.

Agar was smacked for four with his first ball in Test cricket, but recovered to cause some early worries for England in his opening spell.

He wasn’t getting much turn, but there was swing and drift for the left-armer, who was selected to target England’s right-handers.

Agar had just 10 first-class matches under his belt, with 31 wickets at 29.38, but was called in to replace Lyon, who took nine wickets in his last Test match in India.
