Curator confident T20 pitch all good

Curator Les Burdett fully expects the pitch for Wednesday’s Twenty20 international at ANZ Stadium to be ready for the game between Australia and India.

The tourists were left disappointed when a training run at the Sydney Olympic Park venue was limited on Monday morning by the practice wickets on the outer edge of the ground being soft and slippery after recent bad weather in Sydney.

But while Burdett, the former long-time curator of the Adelaide Oval who is preparing the drop-in wicket for Wednesday’s match, conceded the practice wickets were underdone, he was confident the main pitch for the game will be a belter.

“I think this one won’t cause any gremlins. It seems pretty sound to me,” Burdett told reporters.

“I wouldn’t be playing on it today but certainly tomorrow it’ll be ready which means it’s a day early, so if we do get some inclement weather we’re ready to go.”

The state of the practice wickets means both India and Australia may switch their training runs at the venue on Tuesday to the SCG, but Burdett says a multi-purpose venue such as ANZ Stadium represented the future of cricket in Australia.

“The more we can use our stadiums the better it is for everybody. It’s a no-brainer,” he said.
