It seemed Pat Cummins was only on the scene five minutes when he made one of cricket’s most memorable Test debuts, piloting Australia home against South Africa in 2011.
Unfortunately, by those relative terms, his career to date, although brilliant, lasted merely seconds.
But as the Australian fast bowler pursues his second coming in the baggy green, he’s more than happy to take a different approach to that first time around and just take the slow lane.
A devastating near two-year run with foot and back injuries has prevented Cummins playing a first-class match since his Test debut, but the building blocks for a return have been set in place by his inclusion in the Australia A squad in the UK for a three-match tour.
Cummins played an inter-squad two-dayer finishing on Wednesday and hopes for a run against Scotland, Ireland or Gloucestershire in the weeks ahead – starting with the Scots in a four-day game starting on Friday June 7.
Chief selector John Inverarity suggested months ago that Australia’s Ashes squad had the potential to be added to at the last minute, form warranting.
However, Cummins has ruled himself out of any shock recall, saying he’s unlikely to even play a big role for Australia A.
“I don’t think so. I’m still loading up and they’re taking the cautious approach,” Cummins told AAP.
“I don’t think I’ll be playing too many games. I’ll be mainly training and being part of the squad, but the goal is to get back for NSW at the start of the Shield season and see how I go (from there).”
Cummins is booked in to play a number of English league cricket games during the Australia A tour, and hopes to also travel with the A squad to South Africa this year, as he gradually builds up his workload.
The 20-year-old says his body is feeling good after a couple of months training at Brisbane’s Centre of Excellence.
However, he’s tinkered with his technique, making for a few teething problems.
“I’ve made a couple of slight changes which I’m just trying to nail down,” Cummins said.
“They still feel a bit unfamiliar but really happy with how it’s going and, if I get it right, it’s only going to make me a better player. I’m looking forward to transferring that from the nets into games.
“It’s exciting (to be back).”
