Cummins poised to make World Cup

Influential past and present members of Australia’s one-day cricket team are optimistic injury-prone speedster Pat Cummins will make the squad for the World Cup.

The 15-man squad will be announced on Sunday and the 21-year-old NSW quick is widely expected to make the cut after injury sidelined him from pretty much all of the past three Australian summers.

After taking 10 wickets from five matches for NSW in the domestic one-day tournament, Cummins returned to international duty with a bang in the T20 series against South Africa in November.

He conceded just 4.58 runs an over across the three matches.

While he conceded six runs per over in the two one-day internationals he played against the Proteas later in November, he showed he had lost none of his wicket-taking ability, picking up five victims across the two games.

George Bailey, who captained Cummins in those ODI games while regular skipper Michael Clarke was injured, got a first-hand look at the speedster in Friday’s Big Bash League match at Sydney’s Spotless Stadium.

Thunder paceman Cummins picked up 1-26 from his four overs and rapped Hurricanes skipper Bailey on a glove with one delivery.

Bailey said it hadn’t done him any damage, but offered a complimentary assessment of Cummins’ progress and World Cup selection prospects, after the Thunder paceman got through a fifth successive BBL game.

“He’s always been quick, that’s never been his issue,” Bailey told AAP.

“It’s so nice to see Patty back and playing for an extended period, so that’s really good to see.

“I think everyone around the country is really happy seeing that.

“He’s exciting and he’s a wicket-taker and he’s certainly someone who you would think comes into calculations come Sunday.”

Cummins has played in all five of Thunder’s BBL games and his captain and former Australian middle-order batting linchpin Mike Hussey expected him to make the World Cup squad.

“I’m very confident, he’ll be there, he’s a class act.” Hussey said.
