Cricket Aust fines Warner over tweets

Test batsman David Warner has been fined $5750 after pleading guilty to a charge of breaching Cricket Australia’s code of behaviour.

Warner launched into News Limited journalists Robert Craddock and Malcolm Conn on Twitter on Saturday in response to an article published by Craddock which was critical of the Indian Premier League.

The 26-year-old Test opener returned from his IPL commitments in India to attend a teleconference hearing at the Cricket Australia (CA) Melbourne headquarters on Wednesday night.

Warner’s fine was the maximum allowed for a first offence under rule six of the code of behaviour, CA said in a statement.

CA’s Senior Code of Behaviour Commissioner, Justice Gordon Lewis AM, said Warner was found guilty of breaching rule six regarding unbecoming behaviour following his weekend Twitter comments.

“In hindsight, clearly I let my frustrations get the better of me and posted some inappropriate tweets last weekend,” Warner said.

“While I disagreed with the story and my image being used alongside the story, I could have chosen my words better and I apologise for any offence that my language may have caused.

“I’ll continue to have honest conversations with all my followers and I will be mindful of the language I use in future.”
