Cowan under pressure, but Aussies flying

Ed Cowan’s chances of retaining his position for the first Test took a hit on Saturday, failing to go on with the job as the Australians pressed for victory against Somerset in Taunton.

Barring a collapse, the Australians are well on track to win the tour match on day four, going to lunch at 1-153 and needing just 107 more for victory.

Cowan made 46 before edging behind, but his inability to push on to triple figures since his maiden Test century in Brisbane last year is a worry.

Usman Khawaja and Phil Hughes are two men also fighting for their places in the first Test at Trent Bridge and looked strong in the morning session.

Khawaja was 66 not out while Hughes rushed to 37 to back up a first innings 76no.

Cowan, Khawaja and county cricket run-machine Chris Rogers could be fighting for two of the top three positions, with Shane Watson already assured of one opening spot.

Hughes was sent in at No.3 for the second innings, however he appears more likely to fit into the Australian middle order for the Ashes series.

Captain Michael Clarke is due in next as he looks to push through more time in the middle in his return from a three-month injury layoff due to his back problem.

Shane Watson has been put back in the order for the second innings after making 90 in the first dig.

Khawaja has hardly looked troubled on day four, although the man who caused him most grief in the first innings, Somerset quick Jamie Overton, has been ruled out for the rest of the match with a knee problem.

The 26-year-old Khawaja was beaten regularly in the first innings but, on Saturday, scored fluently and was solid in defence.

Khawaja has played under new Australian coach Darren Lehmann at Queensland and the pair share a mutual respect.
